A capacity field of 16 runners have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Group 2 Tramway Handicap (1400m) at Royal Randwick, highlighted by several Group 1 champion of the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival.
Undoubtedly hitting career-best form through the 2014 autumn, trainer Joe Pride has confirmed Tiger Tees in the final field for the 2014 Tramway Handicap.
Winning the Listed Falvelon (1200m) at Eagle Farm first-up this year on February 22nd, Tiger Tees appeared well and truly outclassed when beating just a single runner home in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) on March 15th, but responded in the best way possible when charging home to win the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) on March 29th.
Finishing fourth in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) and third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) most notably in the week’s following his Galaxy triumph, the Dubawi gelding has returned to racing in exceptional form this season; winning both the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) and Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).
Charged with overcoming the relatively wide and awkward barrier 11, Tiger Tees is yet to have a rider confirmed for the 2014 Tramway Handicap.
More than stamping her claims as a serious contender in major Australian events when crossing the ditch in the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer Donna Logan has confirmed Rising Romance for a racing return in the 2014 Tramway Handicap.
A standout performer in major staying events in her native New Zealand over her maiden racing preparation, the Ekraar filly won the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial Open (1500m) on November 30th and the Group 2 Royal Stakes (2000m) on January 1st before finishing second to Puccini in both the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) and Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m).
Unable to completely overcome poor running position when fourth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in her first Australian appearance, jockey James McDonald delivered a near-perfect ride on Rising Romance in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m), winning by more than a length.
Allocated barrier 9, Rising Romance will be partnered by jockey Tim Clark for the first time competitively in the Tramway Handicap.
Performing to a high standard despite being unable to break through for a race win though six starts in autumn, Hooked displayed a keen turn of foot to run on from the rear of the field and finish fourth amongst classy company in the Canterbury Hurlstone RSL Handicap (1400m) first-up on August 16th, but will have to overcome the awkward barrier 12 if to figure in contention in the Tramway Handicap.
Returning to the track this year for fifth amongst classy competition in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) on February 15th, the Casino Prince entire was disappointing when failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) on March 1st, but responded well when finishing a credible fifth in both the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and charging home to finish third in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m).
Confirmed to be partnered by veteran jockey Jim Cassidy in the 2014 Tramway Handicap, Hooked is more than a chance of figuring in competitive position over the required 1400m.
