2015 Tramway Handicap Likely for Amanpour

August 18th, 2015

Trainer Gai Waterhouse was understandably thrilled with the results posted by Amanpour through her recent Autumn Carnival campaign, and has revealed she will keep the mare for a racing return in a race like the Group 2 Tramway Handicap (1400m) at Randwick on September 5th.

Running a credible sixth in the Group 3 Wenona Girl Handicap (1200m) first-up on March 7th, Amanpour continued to build momentum when second behind Catkins in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) on March 28th before charging home to take out the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on Day 2 of The Championships.

Having completed a track gallop on the Randwick course on Tuesday morning, Waterhouse confirmed the mare will not return to racing this weekend and will instead look towards a race like the 2015 Tramway Handicap in a fortnight.

“I don’t think she is quite fit enough and I would like to keep her another two weeks,” Waterhouse told Racenet.

“She worked with Bohemian Lily this morning and Bohemian just had the edge on her and I just felt that Amanpour needed a little bit more work.

“I hate to start my horses when they are not properly fit. I think you do more damage to them doing that.”

Waterhouse is yet to set a specific path for the mare this campaign but confirmed the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) with figure as her major target.

“This is a very, very exciting mare. She looks a picture and her coat is gleaming,” Waterhouse said.

Posting four wins and a further eight minors through eighteen competitive starts so far, Amanpour stamped her claims as one to watch through a strong three-year-old campaign; winning a pair of Sydney sprints early but failing to make much of an impact in any of her black type targets.

Returning last spring in typically great form, the daughter of Northern Meteor ran second in each of the Hyland Race Colours BM75 (1200m) and TAB.com.au Trophy (1700m); taking out the Mossman @ Vinery BM74 (1550m) before ending her campaign third in the Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m).
